F1 2024 Driver’s Championship Line Graphs

Driver’s Championship Points Line Graph.

It’s fair to say that Verstappen has dominated the season so far. Even in recent races where he’s missed out on big scores, his championship lead has so far been preserved. Whether anyone will be able to make it a championship fight against Verstappen remains to be seen.

Battle for Second Place

Driver’s Championship Points Line Graph without Verstappen

The battle for second place has been intense. Pérez, Leclerc and Norris have each been Verstappen’s closest rival at one stage.

Backwards Championship

I always find it fun to see at how the championship would look if the rounds were held backwards.

In this scenario the first few rounds are a battle between Hamilton and Piastri, before Verstappen takes the lead.

Leading Teams

McLaren only overtook Ferrari for second in the constructor’s championship a couple of races ago. Mercedes are still a long way adrift despite their recent successes.

How Secure Are Red Bull?

Red Bull have led the championship since the very first race. Here is a graph of their points advantage over 2nd place.

Red Bull’s points lead has fluctuated across the year.

In 10 of the 14 rounds Red Bull extended their lead. However, for the majority of that time it was Ferrari that were their major competitor. This lessons the impact of Red Bull’s recent (comparative) loss of form, as Ferrari have also lost out to McLaren and Mercedes in this period. The graph of Red Bull’s advantage vs McLaren tells a different story:

Red Bull’s lead over McLaren increased dramatically over the first 7 rounds, but has since shrunk dramatically.
The reduction in points versus McLaren is much more dramatic than the reduction in their lead overall.

Taking the average scores over the last 7 rounds, McLaren would catch and pass Red Bull before the season’s end. (Mercedes would also significantly catch Red Bull, but are probably too far behind to overhaul them.) Of course, a lot can happen between now and the end of the season, with just a small change in competitiveness for either Red Bull or McLaren having a potentially drastic effect on their points scored. Despite Ferrari slipping behind in recent races, they could also be a threat if the form recovers.

Mid-Field Teams

Let’s have a look at the other six teams on the grid.

Aston Martin are in no-man’s land, clear in 5th place. Their points gathering rate has slowed in recent races, but is still at least as high as the teams behind.

RB are surely favourites for 6th place given how consistently they’ve been able to score points so far. By comparison, Haas have the scored the vast majority of their points at just 2 Grand Prix. However, there’s only just over 30 points separating 6th and last place, meaning even the likes of Alpine, Williams and Sauber have a chance to get 6th place if an improved for, allows them to score points semi-regularly.

Which Teams Are Improving?

As a basic way of measuring this, I’ve looked at the points scored in the first seven Grand Prix compared to the subsequent seven Grand Prix. (Note that Sprint Races have not been included here.)

Red Bull

Red Bull scored almost double the number of points per Grand Prix in the last 7 races, compared to the following 7.

Red Bull’s points have slowed as the season has progressed. Of course, this has come from several intertwining factors. In this period Red Bull has gone from seemingly dominant to probably the best car to among the best cars. Other weaknesses have also been exposed. Finally, Pérez’s dramatic drop off in form has been the most dramatic of any top driver in recent memory. His scoring rate was four times higher in the early season.

Pérez scored 4 times as many points per race in the first 7 Grand Prix compared to the next 7.

McLaren

McLaren have gone in the opposite direction, scoring more points as the season progresses.

Ferrari

Ferrari have suffered a similar drop off to Red Bull, and have fallen from the 2nd to 4th most competitive team.

Mercedes

Of all the major teams, Mercedes have seen the biggest swing. Their recent victories seemed unlikely after the first few races of the year.

Hamilton has had the opposite trajectory of Pérez, and has seen his average points per Grand Prix increase fourfold since the early season.

Hamilton scored 80% of his Grand Prix in the last 7 races, with just 20% coming from the first 7.

Aston Martin

As discussed above, Aston Martin’s scoring rate has decreased since the start of the season. This is doubly alarming given their position as the clear 5th fastest team was already considered disappointing. As mentioned in the 2024 driver ratings, there’s a disparity over the drivers.

Other Teams

As the other teams have significantly fewer points, it’s less meaningful to compare their points at different stages of the season. However, we can see that RB have been fairly consistent in the points scored, whereas other teams have been more reliant on specific races,

Fastest Laps

There may be a point on offer for fastest lap (assuming a top 10 finish), but that doesn’t mean the strongest driver is likely to get it. Fastest laps have so far been fairly evenly distributed amongst drivers.

No driver has achieved more than 2 fastest laps so far this year.

Laps Led

It’s no surprise that Verstappen dominates this stat. Teammate Pérez is yet to lead a lap in 2024.

Verstappen has led more than half of all laps so far in 2024
